A 'ref' is like a nickname or a label you give to a specific commit in Git, so you don't have to remember a long, complicated hash. It's how branches, tags, and HEAD pointers work under the hood—just lightweight pointers that move around as you make new commits. I use 'refs/heads/main' to refer to my main branch, and 'refs/tags/v1.0' to mark a release. They make navigating a project's history much easier.
